1 Welcome

The Introduction to R section gave you the tools: R and RStudio, data import and manipulation, ggplot2 graphics, and reproducible documents in Quarto. In this section, I put those tools to work to enable and support statistical reasoning.

I start from the foundations of data description and uncertainty, and then move through formal inference statistics and into regression and model-based analysis. So, the workflow traces along what a practicing biologist actually does, which is to go from a question to a defensible conclusion.

I emphasise choosing appropriate methods, checking assumptions, interpreting model output, and communicating results to a scientific audience according to the norms of our discipline.

Work through the material along the sequence shown in the timetable (see BCB744 Module Overview), participate in ongoing assessment, and prepare yourself for the final theory and integrated assessments.
